Phil Collins Ends 24-Year Paul McCartney Feud via Surprise Phone Call
Phil Collins revealed that an unexpected call from Paul McCartney resolved a two-decade dispute stemming from a 2002 backstage encounter.

A quarter-century of tension between Phil Collins and Paul McCartney dissolved following a spontaneous telephone conversation earlier this year. The Genesis frontman disclosed the resolution during an October 2 appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, describing how the call allowed the pair to finally clear the air after years of unresolved grievance.
Origins of the Backstage Dispute
The conflict traces back to the Queen’s Jubilee Concert in 2002, where an awkward interaction set the stage for decades of friction. Collins had presented McCartney with a rare first-edition Hunter Davies book about The Beatles, seeking an autograph. When McCartney addressed him as “our little Phil,” Collins perceived the comment as patronizing. He admitted his internal reaction was hostile, thinking, “You a–hole.” Although Collins later conceded he likely exaggerated the slight, the incident remained a point of contention for years.
Public scrutiny intensified when Collins revisited the episode while promoting his 2016 memoir, Not Dead Yet. In subsequent comments to The Sunday Times, he characterized McCartney’s behavior as “condescending.” McCartney attempted to bridge the gap by emailing Collins, but the musician chose not to reply, leaving the standoff intact.
Resolution Through Charity Work
The breakthrough arrived when McCartney learned that Collins was gathering items for a King’s Trust charity auction. This context prompted the unexpected phone call, which quickly shifted focus to their long-standing disagreement. Collins expressed regret over the public nature of his previous complaints. McCartney questioned why they still harbored issues, stating, “I thought we were good, you know.” Collins recalled the exchange with amusement, summarizing the outcome simply: “So we kissed and made up.”
