Private letters from Princess Diana to Terence Stamp reveal candid mentions of Prozac and her emotional challenges during 1991.

A collection of handwritten letters from Princess Diana to actor Terence Stamp has emerged, shedding light on her personal difficulties and her use of Prozac during a turbulent period in 1991.
The notes, part of Stamp’s personal archive now up for auction at Bonhams, reveal Diana’s openness about her mental health and her characteristic humor amid the pressures of her marriage to Prince Charles.
One notable letter, dated October 17, 1991, was sent shortly after Diana shared a lunch with Stamp, whom she met through art dealer Oliver Hoare. In the letter, she thanked him for the “perfect” risotto and acknowledged his support during a challenging time.
She wrote, “Not many people would take the time and trouble to delve into such a complex situation… Three cheers for Prozac, not the American variety, I hasten to add!” The note closed with, “Lots of love, Terence, and a huge thank you, from Diana x.”
This letter is estimated to fetch between $2,000 and $2,600 at auction.
In another letter sent weeks later, Diana again referenced antidepressants, thanking Stamp for lunch and caviar and joking, “No Prozac withdrawals as yet!”
The correspondence also highlights Diana’s playful side, as seen in a December postcard inviting Stamp to lunch with the message, “All the Breast from London,” and a cheeky card posing the question, “Why did God invent SEX?” followed by her own punchline: “So that married people do something at least twice a year.”
These letters provide an intimate glimpse into Diana’s personality, combining her vulnerability, wit, and warmth beyond the public image.
