Set photos confirm Rachel Weisz’s return to The Mummy franchise

Visual evidence from the active production site confirms that Rachel Weisz has returned to the The Mummy universe. Recent photographs circulating on social media depict the actress in period-appropriate costumes, marking her first appearance as Evelyn O’Connell since the original trilogy began over two decades ago.

Weisz returns after long absence

This reunion with co-star Brendan Fraser comes 25 years after their initial collaboration. Weisz last portrayed the character in the 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. She did not appear in the third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, released in 2008. Maria Bello took over the role for that film, a change attributed to scheduling conflicts and family obligations. Weisz subsequently dismissed rumors suggesting she had rejected the script, labeling those claims false.

Directors and plot continuity

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo known collectively as Radio Silence, are helming the new project. Their previous work includes the 2019 horror film Ready or Not. The upcoming movie is structured as a direct continuation of the 1999 and 2001 entries, effectively ignoring the events of the 2008 sequel.

Filming commenced on September 7, shortly after Fraser attended the Deauville American Film Festival in France. During an interview with Canal+ at the event, Fraser stated, “I have to be at work on Monday morning.” He also expressed confidence in the crew’s professionalism, describing the atmosphere as “like seeing an old friend again.” David Coggeshall authored the screenplay, while James Vanderbilt and Sean Daniel serve as producers.

Release date adjustment

Universal Pictures has advanced the theatrical launch. Originally scheduled for May 19, 2028, the release window has shifted earlier to October 15, 2027. Specific plot details remain undisclosed at this stage.
