A viral video shows Zendaya staying seated while greeting France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron at a Louis Vuitton show, sparking online debate.

Social media users are debating etiquette after a clip circulated showing Zendaya remaining in her seat while France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron, approached to greet her. The interaction took place during the Louis Vuitton presentation at Paris Fashion Week, where the actress was seated in the front row. Shared by Paris Match, the footage captures the moment Macron stopped by to say hello, leading to widespread commentary on whether standing would have been appropriate.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Cour Carrée of the Louvre, during the brand’s Spring/Summer 2027 show. In the video, Macron, aged 73, moves through the front row exchanging greetings with other attendees, including Pharrell Williams and Lisa of BLACKPINK. When she reaches Zendaya, the two engage in a brief conversation that appears cordial from a distance. However, closer inspection reveals that the 30-year-old actress did not rise from her chair during the exchange.
Reports indicate that Zendaya verbally greeted Macron, expressed pleasure at meeting her, and shook hands, all while remaining seated. This specific detail has become the focal point of the online discussion, dividing opinions on proper protocol for such high-profile interactions.
Critics quickly voiced disapproval, with one widely shared reaction stating that one “gotta get up” when the First Lady says hello. Many commenters agreed that standing is the polite norm in these situations. An Instagram user emphasized this point, writing, “When the Premier Dame from France Talks to You please get up.” Another commenter, who identified as a fan of Zendaya, suggested that American culture might be more relaxed regarding formalities compared to other traditions.
Conversely, defenders argued that the situation may have caught the actress off guard due to the unplanned and quick nature of the greeting. Some noted that a busy fashion show front row does not necessarily constitute a strictly formal setting. These supporters described Zendaya’s demeanor as gracious and polite throughout the interaction. Neither Zendaya nor Macron has publicly responded to the controversy. As a Louis Vuitton ambassador, Zendaya is a frequent attendee at the brand’s Paris events.
