Sylvester Stallone admits parenting flaws, credits wife for raising daughters

"I really wasn’t a very good parent." This admission came from Sylvester Stallone during a recent conversation where he highlighted the pivotal role his wife, Jennifer Flavin, played in raising their children: Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet.

Reflections on fatherhood and family dynamics

The actor spoke these words on the September 26 episode of The New York Times’ The Interview podcast. At 80 years old, Stallone described Flavin as the "greatest woman ever," comparing her to a guardian angel who saved him from death multiple times. He noted that she possesses a capacity for selfless giving that he lacks, stating she raised their daughters with that same dedication.

Childhood trauma and emotional development

Stallone also discussed his difficult early life, which forms part of his new memoir, The Steps, scheduled for release on September 29. His parents divorced when he was approximately 11, leading him to reside in a boardinghouse. He recalled suffering physical abuse from his father and being raised by strangers in an environment lacking nurturing care. He explained that this upbringing taught him to lock away emotions, a theme central to his personal narrative.

Understanding love and past marriages

When questioned about whether these experiences made him tough in a negative way, Stallone agreed. He revealed that he did not understand true love until he reached around age 70, noting that people often mistake different versions of affection for genuine connection throughout their lives. Additionally, he acknowledged prioritizing his career over family during his marriage to Sasha Czack, which lasted from 1974 to 1985.

Grief and loss of son Sage

Stallone and Czack had two sons, Sage and Seargeoh. Sage passed away in 2012 at the age of 36 due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Reflecting on the aftermath of his son’s death, the actor described letting out a wail filled with pain, grief, and guilt.
