US federal authorities have opened an investigation into a United Airlines passenger plane's collision with a light pole on the adjacent New Jersey Turnpike, during its landing on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration said that the incident involving United Airlines Flight 169 occurred on Sunday around 2:00 PM Eastern Time.
The aircraft, a Boeing 767, landed safely, arriving in the United States from Venice, Italy, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airline stated in a later announcement that United Flight 169 "made contact with a light pole" during its final approach to Newark Airport.
It added: "The aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate normally, and none of the passengers or crew members were harmed."
United stated that its maintenance team is working to assess the damage to the aircraft, noting that the crew has been taken out of service pending a "rigorous" safety investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board, in a statement published on the X platform, announced that it has opened an investigation into the incident.
It explained that one of the Board's investigators would head to Newark today, Monday, May 4, 2026, noting that United was instructed to transport the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder for examination as part of the investigation procedures.
It noted that an preliminary report on the incident is expected to be issued within 30 days.
A source familiar with the details of the incident confirmed that a portion of the light pole struck a transport vehicle traveling on the road, resulting in minor injuries to its driver.
A video clip captured by a dashboard camera in the truck showed a loud impact followed by shattered glass, as a result of a portion of the light pole striking the vehicle while it was traveling on the highway.
