Creators of Adults reveal detailed plans for season 3 post-finale

FX’s comedy series Adults has wrapped its eight-episode second season on Hulu, concluding with two simultaneous romantic developments that set up divergent paths for the core ensemble. The finale revealed Billie and Samir — not Anton and Paul Baker — as the roommates heard coupling upstairs, moments after Anton and Paul shared a second on-screen kiss following Anton’s live-TV confession of feelings.

Season 2’s narrative architecture

The second season follows Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao, and Owen Thiele as twenty-something friends sharing a childhood home. Across its eight episodes, the series explores layered interpersonal dilemmas: navigating generational dissonance with a younger peer who holds one’s fake ID; reconciling affection for a mundane office job with peer expectations; confronting familial regression; and balancing the desire for change against the need for stability. The characters deploy elaborate emotional workarounds to avoid direct confrontation, repeatedly making new variations of the same mistakes — yet consistently showing up for one another.

Guest performers in season 2 included Gaten Matarazzo, Jake Shane, Zosia Mamet, Raven–Symoné, Isaac Cole Powell, Ben Marshall, and Julia Fox, who reprised her role as herself.

Renewal status and creative readiness

As of publication, FX has not announced a renewal for Adults season 3. However, co-creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw have confirmed they are prepared to begin production immediately upon greenlight. Both have stated they have already developed detailed story arcs, character combinations, and comedic set pieces for the next installment — many drawn from on-set improvisations, unused jokes, and expanded backstories generated during seasons one and two.

“We’ll start writing whenever anyone tells us to start writing. The truth is, we already have,” Shaw told The Wrap. “There’s so many ideas that made us laugh, things that came up on set — ideas, jokes, backstories, combinations of characters, ways that they could all ricochet off of each other.”

Structural continuity and narrative consequences

Kronengold emphasized that season 3 will pick up shortly after the finale’s events. “I think we’re really curious to see the pretty immediate results of [that] because our eye was on one ball, right?” he told Swoon. “Our eye was on Paul Baker and Anton, but meanwhile, something pretty explosive happened upstairs that’s going to have consequences for everyone.”

Shaw elaborated on the dual relationship trajectories emerging from the finale. “What is next for Billie and Samir is going to look really different than what is next for Anton and Paul Baker. They all made decisions that they can’t take back, which is always a really fun place to find ourselves,” she said in the same interview. “We understand why all four of those people had the nights that they had in our finale, but I think now we really get to say, ‘What next?’”

Episode count and sitcom tradition

When asked about fan requests for more episodes per season, Shaw noted, “We’ll write as many episodes as we are given … I think even getting to do this prequel, nine felt better than eight. The more stories we get to tell, the more that we get to live with these characters, the better.”

Kronengold added, “We see fans asking for ‘filler episodes,’ which is so funny and kind of media-literate, right? … We didn’t get to do that this time around, but that is something that we aspire to do in the lineage of sitcoms that came before us. What are the off days like? The more seasons — not just more episodes, but the more seasons that we have — the more we get to play around with the fluff.”
