French authorities have begun testing AI-powered drones equipped with thermal cameras to monitor beaches, detect swimmers at risk of drowning, issue voice warnings, and automatically deploy life rings—amid 274 drowning deaths recorded over the past two and a half months.

French authorities have launched trials of artificial intelligence–enabled drones designed to identify swimmers in danger of drowning and drop life rings when needed. The initiative follows a surge in drowning incidents linked to three consecutive heatwaves since May.
The system uses thermal-camera-equipped drones to continuously survey coastal areas. It analyzes swimmer behavior for anomalies, transmits audible safety alerts, and autonomously releases life rings upon detecting imminent risk. Rescue personnel can also remotely pilot the drones to respond rapidly to emergencies.
A French specialist company is executing the project with backing from local authorities. Officials anticipate receiving all required operational licenses by next month, paving the way for full deployment ahead of summer 2027.
Project leads state the technology is intended to augment lifeguard operations and extend beach surveillance coverage during periods when on-site patrols are unavailable—particularly as coastal visitation rises sharply during heatwaves.
Over the past two and a half months, France has recorded 274 drowning fatalities across seas, rivers, and private swimming pools. Additional drowning incidents have resulted in severe health complications.
