Iraq’s Interior Ministry and Environmental Police announced the discovery of a subterranean water cave in Khisfa, Haditha District, Anbar Province, housing blind, pale, semi-transparent cave fish linked to the lower Euphrates River system.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry and Environmental Police jointly confirmed the discovery of a subterranean water cave in the Khisfa area of Haditha District, Anbar Province. The site contains an underground watercourse and rare eyeless fish.
The cave lies on the outskirts of Haditha and requires descent to significant depth under difficult conditions, including oxygen deficiency.
Preliminary inspections identified specimens of the Haditha Blind Cave Fish — pale, semi-transparent troglobitic fish adapted to perpetual darkness. Scientists believe these fish feed on bacteria and organic matter transported via groundwater.
Initial assessments indicate the underground water passage connects to the lower reaches of the Euphrates River and extends more than 130 kilometres eastward from the site.
The Interior Ministry stated that specialized teams will conduct water quality testing, biological study, and scientific documentation of the fish. Local authorities have imposed a security cordon to prevent tampering or contamination.
While Environmental Police described the finding as rare, Anbar Environment Directorate clarified that Khisfa has long been known to relevant agencies and that sightings of blind fish in its waters were first recorded in 2010. Scientific sources noted that cave-dwelling fish in Haditha are regionally documented and classified as critically endangered.
This fully integrated subterranean aquatic ecosystem is the first of its kind formally documented in Iraq and the Middle East at this scale and population density.
Subsequent studies are expected to determine the cave’s geological nature, the full extent of the watercourse, its integration with the regional groundwater network, and precise identification and ecological assessment of all species present.
