In a harrowing incident underscoring the dangers of routine electronic device misuse, an Irish man in County Galway sustained serious burns after his smartphone caught fire while charging overnight. He awoke to screams and the smell of smoke—only to discover flames consuming his body as he lay in bed.

The man had placed his mobile phone on the mattress beside him and connected it to a charger before falling into deep sleep. Unaware that lying directly on the device would trap heat, he inadvertently turned the small electronic unit into an incendiary hazard. As he rested motionless atop the phone, battery temperature surged uncontrollably, triggering internal component failure and spontaneous combustion.
