A former military police sergeant shot his wife dead at a gym in Brazil before taking his own life, prompting an official investigation.

Former Military Police Sergeant Luciano Vieira Tavares Pereira entered a fitness centre on Wednesday afternoon and fired six shots at his wife, Karla Alessandra Domingos, before turning the weapon on himself. The incident occurred on October 14 in Lajinha, Zona da Mata, within Brazil’s Minas Gerais state.

Karla Alessandra Domingos, aged 49, was declared deceased at the location of the shooting, according to local reports. Her husband, identified as a soldier, sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a hospital in Lajinha in critical condition.
Medical staff initially stabilised Pereira, but he died later that evening following a transfer to César Leite Hospital in Manhuaçu. While no motive has been publicly released, Brazil’s Military Police have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crime.

An obituary notice shared on Facebook described Domingos as an “excellent teacher” and a “special person,” noting she was dear to those who knew her. The post stated her passing left a lasting memory and a mark of affection and respect from all who were part of her journey.

The family-oriented statement announced a wake scheduled for 7am local time on Thursday, October 15, with funeral services set for 4pm. It offered condolences to family and friends, urging them to find strength and comfort in facing this irreparable loss.
Lajinha City Hall issued a separate tribute via Facebook expressing sorrow over the deaths of both Domingos and Pereira. The municipal message extended solidarity to their families and friends, invoking divine mercy to comfort grieving hearts with strength, faith, and serenity.
However, some social media users questioned the inclusion of the perpetrator in the official city hall statement, asking why pity should be extended to Karla’s killer.
