Red-sided Garter Snakes Invade Canadian Town of Erickson
Millions of non-venomous red-sided garter snakes have invaded homes, schools, and businesses in the Canadian town of Erickson.

The Canadian town of Erickson, located in the Interlake region, has become a habitat for a notable proliferation of non-venomous red-sided garter snakes. Large numbers of these reptiles have invaded homes, schools, shops, and public facilities, creating what residents describe as the worst phenomenon in years.
Scale of the Invasion
Larry Wetherburn, president of the Erickson Curling Club and a resident of the area for 79 years, stated that he removed approximately 30 snakes from the club building in a single day. The appearance of the snakes extended to residential yards, school grounds, and highways. Some residents have begun using buckets to collect the snakes and keep them away from buildings.
Seasonal Migration Patterns
This surge coincides with the autumn migration season for the snakes. Authorities expect their presence to continue until temperatures drop and they retreat into their winter dens. The Interlake region experiences large gatherings and migrations of this specific species during both spring and autumn.
Official Response and Advice
Authorities clarified that their ability to intervene is limited because these snakes are protected under wildlife laws. Manitoba conservation officials advised residents to seal cracks in building foundations, cut grass, and remove piles of debris that could serve as temporary dens for the snakes.
