The social media giant TikTok has permanently suspended the advertising account responsible for promoting the documentary "Musk," a move first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The platform justified this action by pointing to a "repeated pattern of political content that violates its policies."

Documentary distribution timeline

Directed by Alex Gibney and distributed by Bleecker Street, the nearly four-hour film focusing on the billionaire Elon Musk faced this ban just before expanding its reach across US theaters. The documentary initially opened in a limited release on October 9, playing in four venues across New York and Los Angeles. During that opening weekend, it grossed approximately $70,000.

Showings of "Musk" widened significantly on October 16, moving into many more cinemas nationwide. This expansion coincided with the timing of TikTok’s suspension of the promotional account. In response to the ban, Bleecker Street confirmed to THR that it intends to appeal the decision and seek a reversal.

Other platforms' ad policies

This incident is not isolated within the broader landscape of digital advertising for the film. The documentary previously encountered promotional hurdles on other major social media sites, including Meta and YouTube. Unlike TikTok, both companies eventually permitted trailer advertisements for the movie's release.

A spokesperson for Meta described the initial restriction as "an error." Similarly, YouTube issued a statement confirming that the ads had been "cleared to run." X, the platform owned by Musk himself, has maintained a different stance. According to earlier reporting by THR, X has refused to host the trailer for the documentary.
