Uber Launches UK’s First Public Self-Driving Rides in London
Uber, in partnership with UK AI firm Wayve, began public self-driving rides in London on 3 September using Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles under human supervision.

Uber has initiated the United Kingdom’s first publicly available self-driving ride service in London, operating in collaboration with British artificial intelligence company Wayve. The launch marks a foundational step toward broader deployment of autonomous vehicles across UK transport networks.
Service rollout and vehicle specifications
The service commenced on 3 September, deploying a limited fleet of electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI-powered driving system. These vehicles are fully electric and operate exclusively within London’s urban boundaries — excluding airports.
Access and user options
Rides are accessible to Uber customers using UberX, Uber Electric, and Uber Comfort services. No additional fee applies for selecting or being assigned an autonomous vehicle. Before arrival, passengers receive a choice to accept the self-driving ride or opt instead for a driver-operated vehicle. Users in London may also enable the autonomous vehicle preference in the app’s settings to increase the likelihood of assignment.
Human oversight and regulatory compliance
Although the vehicles operate autonomously, each ride is conducted under real-time human supervision. A licensed and London Transport Authority-trained safety driver is present inside every vehicle to monitor operations and assume manual control if required.
Public interest and scale
Uber reported that over 140,000 individuals in London have registered their interest in the service. This initiative represents the first time self-driving rides have been made available to the general public anywhere in the UK.
