Abode Expands Smart Home Lineup with Weatherproof Sensors for Garages and Gates

Abode’s new Garage Tilt Sensor carries a suggested retail price of $34.99 and delivers up to 10 years of battery life under normal operating conditions, the company stated. Its Outdoor Contact Sensor is priced at $49.99 and features an IP66 rating for outdoor durability.

Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Assistant Compatibility

Both devices integrate with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. They operate through Abode’s CUE smart home automation platform, enabling custom routines such as activating driveway lights when an entry gate opens after dark or automatically closing a garage door if left open for more than 10 minutes.

How the Garage Tilt Sensor Works

The Garage Tilt Sensor detects orientation changes exceeding 45° from its resting position in either direction. Abode specifies it is suited for up-and-over or tilt-style garage doors, attic hatch doors, basement tilt windows, and any hinged panel that swings open at an angle. Users receive real-time alerts via the Abode app when the sensor triggers—for instance, during garage door opening or closing.

Outdoor Contact Sensor Design Features

Engineered for external use, the Outdoor Contact Sensor targets metal gates, sheds, storage units, mailboxes, and detached garages. It employs a stronger magnet and wider activation gap than standard indoor sensors to minimize false alarms. Upon triggering, the mid-size unit sends immediate notifications through the Abode app.

Connectivity and Setup

Abode states both sensors achieve connectivity ranges of up to 500 feet under optimal conditions. The company includes step-by-step setup instructions that guide users through range testing prior to permanent mounting.

“Break-ins usually don’t start at the front door. Unlocked side gates or garages present vulnerable access points often left unmonitored by homeowners. […] We built these sensors because the perimeter of a home deserves the same protection as the inside of it,” said Chris Carney, CEO and Founder of Abode.

The sensors expand Abode’s lineup of Apple Home-compatible devices, targeting entry points previously underserved by traditional indoor security hardware—including garages, gates, and sheds.
