American Airlines intends to deploy SpaceX’s Starlink connectivity across its entire mainline fleet, encompassing more than 1,030 narrowbody and widebody aircraft. The carrier announced that installation will commence in early 2027, aiming for connection speeds up to 1 Gbps per plane.

Fleet expansion details

This initiative represents a significant scale-up from the airline’s May 2026 announcement, which targeted approximately 500 planes. The revised plan more than doubles that figure, according to Engadget. The affected fleet consists of roughly 500-plus Airbus narrowbodies, 400-plus Boeing narrowbodies, and 130-plus Boeing widebodies.

Each aircraft will receive a Starlink Performance Aero Terminal, comprising the antenna and modem unit required to communicate with SpaceX satellites. The stated 1 Gbps capacity serves as a ceiling for the total aircraft connection, shared among all passengers onboard, meaning individual user speeds will be lower.

Passenger impact and pricing

The airline reports transporting more than 165 million passengers annually. Its press release did not specify pricing structures, leaving it unclear whether the enhanced service will be complimentary or require payment.

For travelers, the rollout timeline remains uncertain. American Airlines has not identified which specific aircraft or routes will be upgraded first. Widebody jets typically serve long-haul corridors, including US–UK flights, but installation across the full fleet will take time, with some aircraft retaining legacy systems during the transition.

Competitive landscape

Starlink technology is currently active on 724 United Airlines aircraft, with SpaceX holding agreements with 48 airlines globally. Amazon Leo stands as the primary competitor, scheduled to begin deployment for Delta Air Lines in 2028.

Adopting a single satellite provider streamlines operations for American Airlines, ensuring a consistent passenger experience regardless of whether the flight involves a regional-length Airbus or a long-haul Boeing. Until the upgrade is complete, flyers are advised to verify Wi-Fi availability via the airline’s app or website prior to booking. The carrier also continues integrating other tools, such as baggage tracking features, indicating ongoing investment in onboard services.
