Apple appears to have suspended its project to develop AirPods equipped with integrated cameras, according to a prominent Apple insider, with no official confirmation from the company.

A leading Apple news leaker has indicated that Apple has put on hold the development of AirPods featuring built-in cameras, although the company has not officially confirmed this status.
Rumors about this product first emerged in 2024 when the well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple was working on wireless earbuds incorporating cameras. His disclosure was based on a long track record of revealing detailed information about Apple products prior to their official launches.
Recently, there were signs suggesting the project might still be active after code found in a beta version of iOS 27 referenced future AirPods equipped with this camera technology. This discovery led to speculation that development was ongoing.
However, last Friday, Kosutami—recognized for collecting Apple prototypes and leaking information—posted a single word on the platform X: "Suspended." Some interpreted this as indicating the project has been frozen or its development paused.
Apple has not commented on these reports, but the post has sparked widespread speculation regarding the fate of the earbuds, which were viewed as a novel step toward integrating artificial intelligence into wearable devices.
The concept of embedding cameras in AirPods differed from traditional cameras; their purpose was not to capture photos or videos but to assist the Siri voice assistant in understanding the user's environment to provide smarter responses. For example, the earbuds could identify items inside a refrigerator and suggest appropriate recipes.
Concerns over privacy are considered a possible reason for the project's delay, especially since the cameras would monitor the user's surroundings and transmit data to AI systems. Phone Arena highlighted that this type of use raises significant questions about user data protection.
Wired magazine cited an Apple executive stating that the company might face a major challenge convincing users to adopt the device unless clear use cases justify the presence of cameras.
Previous reports, including one from Bloomberg, indicated that Apple planned to launch AirPods with cameras in 2026, anticipating strong demand. These plans coincided with the company's efforts to secure necessary components despite a global shortage of certain memory chips and semiconductor parts.
Challenges related to artificial intelligence may also have contributed to the delay. MacRumors noted that difficulties in developing visual models capable of recognizing objects around the user, alongside Apple's struggles in this area, might have led the company to reconsider its plans.
Earlier, Kosutami hinted at the capabilities of the upcoming earbuds, writing in February that the next generation of AirPods Pro would be able to "see around the user" while maintaining the same price. He later posted "Case closed" before summarizing his latest position with the word "Suspended."
Kosutami is known for possessing Apple prototypes and has successfully revealed accurate details in the past, such as the use of a metal-encased battery in the iPhone 16 Pro before its release. However, he has also made incorrect predictions, including forecasting the launch of AirPods Pro 3 in August 2024.
