Apple to Enable iPhone Clipboard Sharing with Windows PCs

Apple has announced plans to enable cross-device clipboard sharing between iPhones and Windows-based computers. The move responds to Microsoft’s formal interoperability request filed with European Union authorities.

EU Interoperability Requirement Drives Feature Rollout

A newly documented submission on Apple’s EU interoperability request page confirms the company has agreed to develop a solution allowing third-party apps to share and import clipboard items between iPhones and paired devices—including Windows PCs.

This commitment follows Microsoft’s original filing, in which the company stated it currently cannot offer a “universal clipboard” feature comparable to Apple’s native cross-Apple-device functionality. Microsoft specifically requested persistent clipboard access enabling continuous synchronization between iPhones and Windows computers.

Three Core Use Cases Defined

Microsoft outlined three primary use cases for the required capability:

• Copying text or other supported content from an iPhone and pasting it directly onto a Windows PC—and vice versa.
• Performing common productivity tasks without launching dedicated apps or executing repetitive manual steps to initiate transfer.
• Experiencing clipboard synchronization as a seamless, ongoing feature rather than a manual, app-dependent process.

Microsoft emphasized that “copying and pasting across devices is a fundamental productivity interaction that users expect to work smoothly across their primary devices.” The company clarified its objective is not to replicate or simulate the Apple ecosystem experience, but to deliver a baseline level of cross-device productivity that users already anticipate when working across multiple platforms.

Technical Implementation Details

Apple confirmed it will build the solution and described its technical architecture. The company stated: “We will introduce a new solution that follows patterns similar to the Extensions Notifications and Live Activities frameworks introduced in iOS 26.5. This solution will allow developers to create extensions for sharing and importing clipboard items with paired accessories.”
