Cape Station’s initial power block synchronized with the grid on September 30, marking a commercial milestone for Fervo Energy. The geothermal company announced Thursday morning that it started selling electricity one day ahead of schedule.

Record Construction Timeline Achieved

The project reached commercial operations just 23 months after groundbreaking. Tim Latimer, Fervo co-founder and CEO, stated in a release that no team has ever built such a project globally, noting they did it ahead of schedule.

This first phase brings online approximately one-third of what will soon become a 100-megawatt facility. Fervo previously told TechCrunch that the entire site holds potential to generate as much as 4 gigawatts of electricity.

Speed Appeals To Data Centers

As the company refines its construction process, it aims to complete future blocks in as little as 18 months. This rapid deployment targets power-starved data center operators seeking generating capacity across the energy sector.

Geothermal development can proceed in phases, mirroring how data centers are built. This structure allows hyperscalers to bring racks online incrementally as demand increases. Google, Southern California Edison, and other entities have committed to purchasing power from the Cape Station project.

Enhanced Geothermal Technology Explained

Fervo is among several firms developing enhanced geothermal plants. Unlike traditional methods tapping heat sources close to the surface, these companies drill deeper because hotter rock opens more development opportunities.

Founded in 2017, Fervo adapted drilling techniques and technologies from the oil and gas sector for new geothermal resources. The startup raised more than $1.3 billion from investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Congruent Ventures, and Capricorn Investment Group before going public in May via an upsized IPO that raised $1.9 billion.
