Google Assistant to Exit Android and Wear OS on September 4

Google Assistant will stop functioning on Android smartphones, tablets, and Wear OS watches starting September 4, 2026. The company announced the discontinuation in an email sent today to existing users, stating that “Google Assistant is going away on mobile devices.”

According to the message, Assistant is “being discontinued” and “Gemini — our next-generation AI-powered assistant — is now the assistant experience on Android.” The transition begins on September 4, though Google noted that “this process may take a few weeks to reach everyone.”

After removal, users will no longer be able to access or revert to Google Assistant on phones, tablets, or paired devices. The deprecation also covers Wear OS watches, headphones, and vehicles running Android Auto projected from a user’s mobile device.

However, Google Assistant will remain operational beyond September 4, 2026, in cars equipped with Google built-in. The announcement does not extend to other form factors at this time, though Google confirmed Gemini is coming to Google TV devices and Google Home speakers and smart displays.

The docked Pixel Tablet’s timeline for receiving Gemini remains unspecified. Google stated it is “committed to providing a smooth transition” and expressed confidence that Gemini “will offer you an even more capable and helpful assistant experience.”

This shutdown was initially scheduled for the end of 2025 but was extended to 2026. As of now, the “Switch to Google Assistant” option remains available within the Gemini app.
