Google firmware 6.144 adds touch translation and sleep pause to Pixel Buds
Release 6.144 introduces touch-activated Live Translate, Gemini voice controls, and ecosystem-dependent features for Pixel Buds Pro 2 and 2a.

Google has begun distributing release_6.144 for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a, introducing a touch shortcut for translation sessions alongside expanded voice controls and an automatic sleep pause function. Several of these new capabilities depend on integration with the broader Pixel ecosystem, as Tap to Mute requires a connected Pixel phone and sleep automation relies on a Pixel Watch.
Touch-Activated Translation Features
Enhanced Live Translate allows users to initiate a translation session by touching an earbud, eliminating the need to retrieve their phone. The feature continues to utilize Google Translate, meaning the earbuds do not perform translation independently, but the shortcut aims to speed up activation during conversations or while using listening mode in another language.
Ecosystem-Dependent Controls
Gemini voice controls now manage ANC, equalizer settings, and touch-control configurations. Tap to Mute enables microphone toggling during calls when paired with a Pixel phone. Automatic sleep pause uses sleep detection from a Pixel Watch to stop playback, disable touch gestures, and silence notifications.
Pro 2 Exclusive Noise Cancellation
Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation is exclusive to the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and adjusts audio and noise cancellation based on the earbuds’ in-ear seal. This addition compensates for small fit shifts that occur while walking or speaking, helping preserve noise isolation without requiring repositioning. The Pixel Buds 2a receive the other additions, including broader Gemini control over earbud settings.
Firmware Rollout Details
The new functions highlight Google’s reliance on its own hardware ecosystem. Android users without a Pixel phone cannot access Tap to Mute, and sleep-triggered controls remain unavailable without a Pixel Watch. The firmware is rolling out gradually and can be checked within the Pixel Buds app under More settings > Firmware update.
