Huawei Launches Slimmer MatePad Pro 12 on Sept. 2

On September 2, Huawei will introduce the MatePad Pro 12 to global markets during a launch event in Munich. The device measures just 4.7mm in thickness and weighs 454 grams—slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, the MatePad Pro 12.2, which was 5.5mm thick and weighed 508 grams.

PaperMatte OLED cuts reflections by 60%

The tablet’s display uses Huawei’s PaperMatte OLED technology, engineered to reduce screen reflections by 60%. Reviewers previously praised earlier PaperMatte implementations for easing eye strain under bright ambient light—a benefit for users engaged in sketching, handwritten note-taking, or extended reading sessions. The device supports both the Huawei Glide Keyboard, which includes a multitouch trackpad, and the M-Pencil stylus.

The MatePad Pro 12 features a PaperMatte OLED display with a 60% reflection reduction and a slimmer camera module.

Hardware specs mirror Chinese variant

Internally, the global version is expected to align with the model unveiled in China in August: it will be powered by the Kirin T93 processor, include 12GB of RAM, feature a 50MP main camera, and house a 10,400mAh battery. These specifications are paired with a chassis described as “razor-thin,” amplifying their technical impact.

HarmonyOS limits Google service access

The MatePad Pro 12 runs HarmonyOS, which does not include Google Mobile Services. As a result, users will not have access to Gmail, Google Maps, or the Google Play Store—and most consumers lack a practical method to restore them. This presents a significant usability hurdle for individuals and enterprises already integrated into Android or Google Workspace ecosystems. In the United States, an additional constraint applies: Huawei remains on the US Entity List, making retail availability highly unlikely.

UK pricing and promotions remain unconfirmed

Final pricing and regional availability will be disclosed at the Munich event. UK buyers are anticipated to see positioning comparable to the outgoing MatePad Pro 12.2, which launched at £699–£899. Huawei has previously offset software limitations with launch incentives—for example, the MatePad Pro 12.2 debuted with a £100 discount and a bundled keyboard. A similar offer for the new model could position it competitively against the iPad Pro 13, priced from £1,099. Huawei Central confirms all definitive details—including European and UK pricing and availability—will be released at the September 2 event.
