NASA expert Umberto Campins said no immediate asteroid threats exist but stressed long-term planetary defense readiness, citing the 2022 DART mission’s success, the April 2029 Apophis flyby, and upcoming space mining initiatives for water and rare metals.

NASA has reaffirmed that asteroid impacts are a natural and inevitable part of solar system history — events that “will inevitably recur” — while emphasizing that no direct threat currently exists to Earth. The agency underscored the need for sustained preparation over the long term, even though the probability of such an impact occurring within the present generation remains extremely low.
Umberto Campins, a NASA expert, delivered these remarks during a conference in Oviedo, Spain. He explicitly stated there are no known imminent hazards, urging the public not to worry. At the same time, he stressed the critical importance of developing early-detection systems and deflection technologies capable of identifying hazardous objects and altering their trajectories well in advance.
Campins outlined decades-long efforts by NASA, coordinated through an international network of observatories, to detect near-Earth asteroids and assess their risk profiles. The agency conducts routine planetary defense exercises every three years to maintain operational readiness and refine response protocols for potential emergencies. He pointed to the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission in 2022 as definitive proof that kinetic impact deflection works: the spacecraft successfully altered the orbit of its target asteroid, transforming planetary defense from science fiction into practical engineering reality.
Campins also addressed the upcoming close approach of asteroid 99942 Apophis in April 2029. The object will pass within less than 32,000 kilometers of Earth — closer than many satellites — yet poses zero impact risk. Instead, the flyby presents a unique scientific opportunity to observe how Earth’s gravity affects the asteroid’s rotation and surface properties. Both NASA and the European Space Agency have planned dedicated observation campaigns for this event.
Beyond hazard mitigation, Campins highlighted the substantial economic value of asteroids. He forecast that the next two decades will see the launch of space mining projects aimed at extracting water and rare metals — including platinum — from near-Earth asteroids. Such resources could support the establishment of permanent human outposts and infrastructure beyond Earth.
