Estonian startup Rollo Robotics has introduced the 1ROLLO security robot, billed as the world’s first stable single-wheel security robot prepared for operation in real-world environments. The robot conducts patrols along pre-defined routes and continuously scans its surroundings using a 360-degree computer vision system. It is designed for monitoring industrial facilities and university campuses, balancing dynamically on a single wide wheel while maintaining constant environmental surveillance.

Patented Single-Wheel Stabilisation System

Unlike conventional four-wheeled security robots, 1ROLLO relies on a patented stabilisation system that maintains balance atop a single 60-centimetre-diameter wheel, according to science.mail. Its design incorporates a high-speed flywheel housed inside the wheel itself. As it spins, the flywheel generates gyroscopic forces that keep the robot upright during motion, braking, and travel across uneven terrain. During turns, the flywheel tilts to enable smooth navigation through curves. Sensors feed real-time data to the company’s proprietary software, which continuously adjusts balance—even under strong wind or on rough ground.

Operational Capabilities and Environmental Resilience

The robot stands 110 centimetres tall and weighs approximately 45 kilograms. Its top speed reaches 30 kilometres per hour, and its battery supports eight hours of continuous operation. When power levels drop, it autonomously returns to a wireless charging station—enabling 24/7, seven-day-a-week operation with minimal human intervention. It carries an IP65-rated enclosure, making it resistant to water and dust, and capable of functioning in temperatures ranging from –20°C to 55°C.

Its 360-degree computer vision system integrates edge-based artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies to detect people, vehicles, open doors, and other anomalous activities. Navigation precision along pre-set paths is ensured by an RTK-GNSS positioning system. Any deviation from its designated route triggers alerts sent to the cloud platform via 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi networks. Operators can monitor live video feeds and communicate remotely using built-in microphones and speakers—or dispatch security personnel to the location.

Design Advantages and Hardware Flexibility

According to its developers, the robot’s slim, single-wheel architecture enables agile manoeuvring in narrow, congested corridors—spaces where larger four-wheeled robots face mobility constraints. The standardised robotic platform supports modular integration of thermal cameras, PTZ cameras, night-vision devices, RFID readers, and other peripheral equipment.

Rollo Robotics plans to offer 1ROLLO through a monthly subscription model covering maintenance, software updates, and hardware upgrades. Commercial availability is scheduled for 2027.
