Recent leaks indicate that Samsung has likely finalized the names for two of its upcoming flagship foldable smartphones. According to SamMobile, which cited insider sources, the company intends to launch these devices under the names Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, as reported by the specialized smartphone news site.

The intriguing aspect lies in which model will carry each name. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is set to be the direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 released in 2025, while the broader model, previously rumored as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, will be branded simply as Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The Fold 8 is expected to feature a wider and shorter design compared to the Ultra version, resembling the anticipated foldable iPhone from Apple. However, this wider form factor will come with compromises, including the removal of one rear camera, similar to the ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge.

The use of the "Ultra" label for the higher-tier Fold 8 model raises questions, considering Samsung's Galaxy S Ultra phones have set high standards with features like S Pen support and a 5x optical zoom lens alongside a 3x zoom lens.

The Fold 8 Ultra reportedly will include welcomed upgrades over the Fold 7 and earlier models, such as a 5,000mAh battery, 45W charging capability, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. However, it is not expected to offer a privacy display, S Pen support, 60W charging, or a more powerful zoom camera—all features available on the Galaxy S26 Ultra—potentially diminishing the "Ultra" designation's significance.

Rumors also suggest that Apple's first foldable phone will be named iPhone Ultra. While it is unclear if this influenced Samsung's naming decisions, the timing is notable. Samsung has been using the "Ultra" name in its Galaxy S series since 2020, indicating the company is unlikely to have adopted this naming from Apple.

Samsung is anticipated to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 8 during the upcoming Unpacked event scheduled for July 22. The company may also increase prices for its new foldable phones, following a similar approach taken with the Galaxy S26 series.
