South Korea Unveils $576 Billion Investment in AI Semiconductor Chips
South Korea plans over $576 billion investment led by Samsung and SK Hynix to expand semiconductor manufacturing focused on AI and advanced memory chips.

South Korea has announced one of its largest industrial investment initiatives in the semiconductor sector, unveiling a plan exceeding $576 billion. This effort, spearheaded by Samsung and SK Hynix, aims to establish new manufacturing facilities and directly link the semiconductor industry with the surge in artificial intelligence (AI) and data center development. The strategy centers advanced memory and HBM chips as key elements in the global competition for intelligent computing.
According to a Reuters report, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung described the plan as built around a threefold focus involving semiconductors, physical AI, and data centers. Samsung and SK Hynix are set to invest 800 trillion won, approximately $518.30 billion, to develop new production sites in the southwestern region of the country. Additional domestic investments will target areas including Gwangju, South Jeolla, and packaging complexes near Seoul.
This move comes amid rising global demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are essential for powering advanced AI processors. The government noted that traditional industrial zones around Yongin and Pyeongtaek have reached their capacity limits. Consequently, the focus is shifting to the southwest, where there is untapped energy availability. However, industry experts caution that establishing advanced manufacturing plants requires significant resources such as electricity, water, logistics, suppliers, and specialized skills. This presents a substantial challenge for South Korea to translate its industrial ambitions into sustained large-scale production.
