Starlink Secures 10-Year UAE Satellite Communications License

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority in the United Arab Emirates announced it has awarded Starlink Satellite Communications Services a 10-year general satellite services license.

This license permits the company to build, operate, and manage a public satellite communications network and deliver broadband satellite internet services across the UAE.

Strategic Infrastructure Integration

The license marks a significant milestone in the regulation of satellite communications services in the country. It introduces a complementary space-based layer to the national digital infrastructure, augmenting terrestrial networks—including fiber-optic cables and fifth-generation (5G) systems—to diversify internet access sources, strengthen national network resilience, enhance service readiness, and ensure continuity under all conditions.

It also supports critical sectors such as maritime and aviation transport, energy, logistics services, and emergency response operations.

Regulatory Framework Evolution

From a regulatory perspective, the license reflects the Authority’s approach to adopting a flexible and open framework for emerging technologies. It expands user options, diversifies communication solutions and technologies, and stimulates competition—factors that directly influence service quality, customer experience, and the sustained availability of telecommunications services.

Majid Sultan Al-Mismar, Director General of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, stated that granting the license constitutes a qualitative addition to the UAE’s telecommunications sector. He added that the move demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies and developing a flexible, innovation- and investment-friendly regulatory environment.
