Researchers at Texas A&M found that a common viral infection in mice may trigger Parkinson's disease by damaging dopamine-producing brain cells.

A study published in the scientific journal BBIH revealed an unexpected factor that increases the risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
The research, conducted by scientists from Texas A&M University, indicated that viral infections might stimulate the progression of Parkinson's disease. This conclusion was reached after developing a new disease model using mice.
Instead of employing toxic substances or genetic modifications, the researchers infected mice with a virus naturally present among these animals. Within just one week, the virus infiltrated brain cells responsible for producing dopamine. After a month, these cells began to deteriorate, leading to symptoms characteristic of Parkinson's disease in the mice, including slowed walking, impaired motor coordination, and movement difficulties.
According to the researchers, the findings confirm that certain viruses can cause brain inflammation, which over time results in neuronal death. Furthermore, the disease may develop years after the initial infection and its onset likely depends on an individual's genetic makeup and other environmental factors.
The scientists also noted that the experiments were conducted on laboratory animals and that the results still require validation through clinical trials involving humans. Nevertheless, these findings could enhance understanding of Parkinson's disease causes and accelerate the development of early detection and treatment methods.
