WhatsApp Introduces 8-Character Two-Step Verification Passwords

Meta has rolled out a new update to WhatsApp’s two-step verification system, enabling users to replace the standard six-digit PIN with a stronger, custom password. The updated feature requires passwords to be at least eight characters long and mandates inclusion of at least one letter and one number; special characters are also permitted.

Optional but more secure authentication

This enhanced two-step verification remains optional. However, Meta states that adopting a robust password adds an extra layer of account protection—particularly when users might otherwise rely on easily guessable numeric codes.

Multiple passwords for multi-device use

The update also introduces support for multiple passwords per account, aimed at users who access WhatsApp across several devices. Android and iOS users can now add and manage distinct passwords directly through the app’s Settings menu, under Account > Passwords.

Contextual caller information for unknown numbers

A separate update provides additional contextual data when receiving calls from numbers not saved in the user’s contacts. Users can now see the caller’s country and whether they share membership in any common chat groups.

According to Meta, this caller context is intended to help users better identify suspicious calls and potential fraud attempts. As of now, the feature is available exclusively on Android devices.

The changes form part of Meta’s broader initiative to strengthen account security, offering users more powerful tools to control data safety and reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
