World Cup 2026
Mbappé Says France Has Yet to Prove Itself as the Greatest Team
Mbappé emphasizes that despite France's potential, the current team has not yet won a major title to be considered the strongest in history.

Comparisons have been drawn between the current French national football team and some of the great teams of the past, particularly due to the performances of Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé, who have collectively scored 13 goals. However, the French captain stated that this team has not yet accomplished anything significant.
Under the guidance of coach Didier Deschamps, the team reached the semifinals after a 2-0 victory on Thursday, demonstrating patience and control. They are set to face the winner of the match between and Belgium, scheduled for later on Friday.
Mbappé, who has scored 20 goals in 20 World Cup matches, including four in final stages, remarked, "I was a champion in 2018 and a runner-up in 2022, but this team has not achieved anything yet. Still, it is the team with the greatest potential. There are many advantages in this team, which allows you to dream."
Despite this, the 27-year-old player, who currently leads the scoring chart in this World Cup edition with eight goals, tied with , insisted that France has not yet reached the level of the greatest teams.
Mbappé added, "As far as I know, this team has not won anything so far. I have always said that the strongest teams are those that win championships. That is not the case for this team yet, so no, it is not the strongest."
France has appeared in four of the last seven World Cup finals, winning the title in 1998 and 2018, and finishing as runners-up in 2006 and 2022.
If France qualifies for the final on July 19 in New York, they will still be able to compare themselves with West Germany, arguably the strongest nation in the tournament's history, which reached four finals between 1974 and 1990.
Mbappé stressed the need for humility, stating, "We know the potential of this team. But we have to prove it on the field. We are confident, but there is still a lot to prove if we want to be seen as an almost unbeatable team."
