Ronaldo Sets Unprecedented World Cup Record Surpassing Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo made history on Monday by becoming the first footballer to score goals in six separate editions of the FIFA World Cup. He achieved this milestone during Portugal's match against Uzbekistan in the second round of the group stage.

The 41-year-old striker netted his goal in the sixth minute by converting a precise cross from the right wing delivered by João Cancelo, placing the ball into the net from close range.

This goal increased Ronaldo's total World Cup tally to nine, spanning the tournaments of 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026. His initial World Cup goal was scored over two decades ago via a penalty kick.

In the match against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo made his 24th World Cup appearance. Alongside Argentina's captain Lionel Messi, he holds the record for participating in six World Cup editions.

Meanwhile, Messi holds the record for the most World Cup matches played, with 28 appearances. On Monday, Messi also set a record for the highest number of goals scored in the tournament, reaching 18 goals since his debut in 2006. However, Messi did not score in every World Cup he participated in, notably failing to score during the 2010 edition.

Ronaldo has also extended his international career statistics to 144 goals in 230 international matches, both of which are recognized as world records.

The goal by Portugal’s captain against Uzbekistan added another chapter to Ronaldo’s World Cup legacy.
