A deadly assault by Boko Haram militants in the Marte district of Nigeria’s Borno state has resulted in the deaths of 20 farmers. Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed that numerous other individuals sustained injuries during the attack, while three people remain unaccounted for.

Police confirm casualties and launch probe

Daso stated that members of the terrorist group targeted agricultural workers in the region. He reported that an investigation into the incident has been initiated to determine further details surrounding the violence. The spokesperson emphasized the severity of the loss, noting the high number of fatalities among the farming community.

Historical toll of regional insurgency

Boko Haram has maintained a presence in Nigeria since the early 2000s. Since 2009, the group’s large-scale acts of terrorism have claimed tens of thousands of lives across the country. The organization has also expanded its operations beyond Nigerian borders, conducting attacks in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger since 2015.

In the Lake Chad Basin region alone, at least 2,000 people have died due to insurgent violence. The ongoing conflict has forced hundreds of thousands of residents to flee their homes, creating a significant displacement crisis throughout the affected areas.
