A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Panama's Pacific coast on Monday evening, 32 kilometers southwest of the city of Soná, three days after a powerful quake caused damage to dozens of homes.

The Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Panama announced that the tremor occurred on October 12, 2026, at 18:20 local time, at a depth of 5 kilometers, noting that the recorded data is preliminary.

The epicenter of the earthquake was concentrated near the provinces of Veraguas and Chiriquí, on the Pacific coast.

This new earthquake comes after the tremor that hit the country on October 9, which had a magnitude of 7.2 according to the Institute of Earth Sciences in Panama, occurring at a depth of 4 kilometers, 39 kilometers northwest of the town of Tonosí.

In contrast, the United States Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the October 9 earthquake at 7.7, as reported by the Spanish news agency EFE.

Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences, Néstor Luceño, said that the number of aftershocks exceeded 350 by Monday morning, expecting them to continue until the fault zone stabilizes.

Damage assessment operations resulting from the October 9 earthquake continue in the affected areas of Panama.

According to the latest preliminary tally issued by the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), 90 homes were damaged in Chiriquí province, including 62 with partial damage, while 28 homes were completely destroyed.
