In the first British response to Israel's closure of the consulate in Jerusalem, London announced that its mission would continue operating in the city under a new name.

On Thursday, Israel ordered the closure of the British Consulate in East Jerusalem amid plans by London to impose sanctions on settlements in the occupied West Bank.

In this regard, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated today that the building of the Consulate General in East Jerusalem will not be closed but will be known as the "British Mission in Jerusalem," remaining independent, operational, and continuing to serve Palestinians.

He added in a statement that Britain "does not accept that the Israeli government has the legal right to close the Consulate General in Jerusalem," noting that the British presence in the city dates back nearly 200 years.

The British minister reiterated his country's long-standing position that "East Jerusalem is occupied territory," confirming that the building will continue to operate under the name "British Mission in Jerusalem."

He clarified that the mission will remain independent and fully operational, continuing to provide vital services and work with Palestinians, ensuring the continuation of the British presence in Jerusalem and the United Kingdom's role in supporting the two-state solution.

Lammy noted that Britain temporarily withdrew a number of staff members and their families to ensure their safety, explaining that this was due to the lack of necessary guarantees for employee security and protection of the mission headquarters.

He also pointed out that his country will work over the coming months to strengthen its presence again in Jerusalem, indicating that Britain will not take similar measures against Israel as long as discussions between the two sides continue seriously.

Lammy affirmed the United Kingdom's adherence to the measures announced on September 8, in coordination with the international community, in support of the two-state solution and achieving peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians.
