Clashes Between Italian Police and Protesters in Milan and Bologna
Italian police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters in Milan and Bologna amid demonstrations against rising living costs.
Italian media reported that police officers fired tear gas today, Saturday, after being attacked by protesters who threw stones and other objects during clashes that erupted in the square opposite Milan Cathedral. Clashes also occurred in the city of Bologna following protests over the high cost of living.
The Italian News Agency (ANSA) reported that police in Bologna, in northern Italy, used water cannons in an attempt to disperse crowds and arrested seven people after another protest turned violent.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who will face elections next year, condemned the violence.
This demonstration coincides with protests in Portugal and France against rising living costs and deteriorating public services, as well as smaller protests in Belgium. Albania is also witnessing mass protests where demonstrators are demanding the resignation of the prime minister.
Protesters in Spain have also held similar demonstrations related to the housing crisis and rising rents.
