Deadly Strikes and Fires in Kyiv as Russia Targets Ukrainian Transport Corridor

The Ukrainian authorities announced today, Tuesday, that seven people were killed in a Russian missile strike targeting a railway depot in Kyiv and other facilities, leading to fires and extensive damage at the site.

Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Bertsovsky said via the Telegram app that the ballistic missile attack killed seven people, including six employees of the railway company, while a seventh colleague was hospitalized with injuries. He added that the damage at the site was "significant".

The announcement comes amid a wider overnight attack on the capital and its surroundings. Kyiv's military administration reported three deaths and five injuries in the city, without providing further details. Additionally, Kyiv region’s military administration confirmed one death in Boryspil, east of the capital.

Regional administration head Timur Tkachenko described the attack as large-scale, involving missiles and combat drones, and stated it targeted "civilian" infrastructure.

In the city itself, a strike damaged a five-story residential building, injuring eight people, including a child. Journalists from AFP heard around ten successive loud explosions and saw flashes in the skies of Kyiv following a warning of a ballistic missile attack.

The Ukrainian Air Force had urged residents to stay in shelters, warning of ongoing risks from ballistic weapons and other attack methods directed at Kyiv and its region.

Ukraine is facing a shortage of interceptors, particularly American Patriot missiles, whose supplies have dwindled since the outbreak of war in the Middle East, limiting its ability to counter ballistic missiles.

Meanwhile, Russian Leningrad Oblast Governor Alexander Drozdov reported a fire broke out in the port area of Oskol-Luga, overlooking the Baltic Sea, after a drone attack, noting damage occurred and efforts to repel the assault continued.

The port is one of the key export hubs for oil, fertilizers, and coal in western Russia and has previously been subjected to repeated Ukrainian attacks.
