Ebola outbreak in DR Congo spreads to two new health zones

The spread of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has widened, reaching two fresh health zones. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this expansion raises the count of impacted areas to 63 health zones distributed across seven provinces.

New infection sites identified

The WHO reported that recent cases were detected in the Bolo health zone within the South Ubangi province, which borders the Central African Republic. Additionally, infections appeared in the Dongu health zone located in the Haut-Uele province, adjacent to South Sudan.

Case and death toll statistics

Latest data from the WHO indicates that as of September 23, the country had recorded 7,890 confirmed cases of the virus. Among these, 3,799 deaths have been documented, pointing to a continued high fatality rate among those infected.

Obstacles to containment efforts

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the WHO, stated that armed conflicts and population displacement are hindering health teams' ability to reach affected communities. These disruptions also complicate the tracking of individuals who have come into contact with infected persons.

Ghebreyesus noted that limited access to certain regions, combined with displacement and overcrowding, increases the risk of transmission. Despite these challenges, he acknowledged improvements in contact tracing, safe burial practices, and communication with local communities.

Vaccine and treatment gaps

The WHO indicated that while the overall number of cases is declining, viral transmission remains uneven across the affected zones. This disparity sustains the need for strengthened surveillance and health response operations.

Containment efforts face an additional hurdle due to the absence of an approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain causing the current outbreak. The organization is working to accelerate clinical trials for potential vaccines and therapies.

Provincial impact distribution

Ituri province serves as the primary epicenter of the outbreak, recording more than 6,000 confirmed cases since its onset. North Kivu province has emerged as the second most affected region.
