The European Union emphasized the importance of holding Palestinian elections "as soon as possible," according to statements made by the bloc's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas.

Kallas's statement, which followed a meeting of European foreign ministers on Monday, came two days after President Mahmoud Abbas announced the postponement of the elections until next year.

Kallas said that European ministers "expressed their regret over the postponement of the Palestinian elections. Legislative and presidential elections must be held as soon as possible."

Abbas had announced the postponement of the legislative elections, which were scheduled to take place in November, calling for them to be held alongside the presidential elections in September 2027.

Abbas's decision was based on recommendations from the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and after a comprehensive assessment of the current situation, as reported by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Sources attributed the postponement to highly complex field and security obstacles in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, which prevent the organization of a free, fair, and inclusive electoral process for all citizens at this time.

The decree also follows intensive consultations held between major Palestinian factions in Cairo, where political forces deemed it necessary to allow more time to ensure the success of national dialogue and to organize internal affairs.

In turn, Paris expressed its regret over Palestinian President Abbas's decision to postpone the legislative and presidential elections, calling on him, in a statement by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to reconsider the decision.

A spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: "France calls on the Palestinian authorities to reverse their decision and hold parliamentary and presidential elections throughout Palestine as soon as possible."

Merging the legislative and presidential milestones into a single date in 2027 is a step aimed at unifying political efforts and renewing the constitutional legitimacy of Palestinian institutions simultaneously, to ensure stability in the overall political landscape.
