Explosions and Fires Shake Ukraine as Russia Intensifies Attacks

A new explosion shook the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, late Saturday into Sunday, coinciding with a wave of Russian drone attacks. Meanwhile, the coastal city of Odesa was subjected to a series of strikes that resulted in injuries, damage, and fires at several locations.

The attacks came amidst mutual escalation between Moscow and Kyiv, after strikes by both sides killed at least 16 people and injured others in Russia and Ukraine, according to local authorities announced on Saturday.

Building targeted
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a drone hit a building in the Solomianskyi district of the Ukrainian capital, causing a fire to break out.

Emergency teams rushed to the site to deal with the aftermath of the strike, while authorities continued to assess the extent of the damage caused by the attack.

Kyiv had earlier witnessed other explosions, coinciding with waves of Russian attacks targeting the capital.

Series of attacks
In the south of the country, the coastal city of Odesa was subjected to a series of Russian attacks, resulting in at least two injuries and damage to several sites, according to local media reports.

Fires broke out in multiple places within the city, with thick columns of smoke rising. Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper announced via the "Telegram" app that the strikes hit private homes, a production facility, and warehouses.

Earlier on Saturday, the Russian army launched two attacks on a store for tools and equipment in the coastal city.

These developments come as mutual attacks between Russia and Ukraine escalate, with local authorities in both countries announcing that at least 16 people were killed and others injured due to strikes carried out by both sides.

Moscow and Kyiv have intensified their air operations in recent months, with the expanded use of long-range drones to strike targets inside each other's territories.

Ending the war
Concurrent with the ongoing attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his accusation that Russia is "not ready to end its war."

Zelenskyy said in a post on the "X" platform that Russian President Vladimir Putin "continues to look for pretexts to prevent meetings or talks and to end the fighting," considering that Moscow is seeking justifications to continue the war.

He added that the United States views the situation in the same way, according to him, noting that Ukraine is working with Washington, Europe, Canada, Japan, and other countries to push towards ending the war.

Zelenskyy expected intense diplomatic activity in the coming days and in October aimed at changing the situation.

Thousands of drones
The field escalation coincided with Russia's increased reliance on long-range drones in targeting sites inside Ukraine.

According to "Reuters," Russia launched about 2,100 drones and 136 missiles during September in attacks targeting economic sectors and facilities for energy, ports, and infrastructure.

In response, Ukraine intensified its drone attacks inside Russian territory, focusing strikes particularly on facilities related to the energy sector.
