French PM Signals Curfew Extension After Calm Night
Prime Minister Lecornu confirmed curfews helped restore order and hinted at further restrictions in Paris and other cities.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated on Tuesday that the curfew imposed across parts of Paris and other municipalities has successfully maintained calm during the night. The measure was introduced following several days of protests marked by violence and riots.
Lecornu communicated this update via his account on the X platform, noting that "specific curfew measures contributed to calming the situation last night." He added that new curfew hours would be determined for the evening based on current conditions.
Local Authorities Retain Discretion
The prime minister clarified that local authorities on the ground retain the power to reimpose targeted curfews in specific areas if they deem it necessary for the coming night.
According to Radio France Internationale, French authorities announced the initial curfew starting Monday, October 19. The restrictions applied to certain zones in Paris, particularly around Place de la République and the Les Halles district.
The ban also extended to northern French cities including Lille, Douai, Wattignies, and Dinan. Additionally, demonstrations were prohibited in several Paris neighborhoods beginning at 8:00 PM.
Drivers Behind Recent Unrest
France has experienced widespread protest movements driven by grievances over the high cost of living, resource shortages in the education sector, and the deterioration of public services.
The participants in these demonstrations included former activists from the Yellow Vests movement, secondary school students, university students, climate activists, and farmers.
