The far-right "Alternative for Germany" party and the left-wing "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" achieved a notable political step on Wednesday, after their combined votes succeeded in passing a proposal within the parliament of the state of Saxony-Anhalt calling for a halt to German military and financial aid to Ukraine, and the lifting of sanctions imposed on Russia.

The proposal, adopted during an extraordinary session in the city of Magdeburg, demands that the state government act through the German Federal Council (Bundesrat) to push for stopping the arming of Kyiv and ending sanctions on Moscow, while prioritizing diplomatic negotiations.

The "Alternative for Germany" party described the step as a peace initiative emerging for the first time from a German parliament since the start of the war.

The significance of this step lies in the parliamentary convergence between the two parties, which adopt opposing positions regarding the continuation of military support for Ukraine, despite their differences on other issues.

This comes after "Alternative for Germany" won a significant electoral result in the state, strengthening its position within the local parliament.

In contrast, representatives of the Christian Democratic Union, Social Democratic Party, Greens, and Left Party criticized the proposal, warning of the repercussions of abandoning support for Kyiv in the face of Russia.

Adopting the proposal does not mean directly changing German foreign policy, as the authority to make decisions related to military aid and foreign relations remains with the federal government in Berlin, and the local decision does not bind it to implement the demands contained therein.
