Iraq: Six-Year Prison Sentence for Senior Electricity Ministry Official on Bribery Charges

The Iraqi Federal Integrity Commission announced on Monday the issuance of a court verdict sentencing the general manager of Middle Euphrates Power Generation Company to six years in prison and a financial penalty for being found guilty of accepting a bribe in exchange for releasing payments owed to one company.

The commission, in its statement regarding the case it investigated and referred to the judiciary, said the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court issued a verdict sentencing the general manager of Middle Euphrates Power Generation Company and one of the company’s employees to six years in prison and a fine of ten million dinars, based on their receipt of a bribe from one company in return for releasing its outstanding financial dues.

The commission added in a statement published on its Facebook page that after reviewing the evidence and proof gathered in the case, the court found them sufficient and convincing for conviction, thus issuing the verdict in person sentencing the defendants to imprisonment and fines, in accordance with the provisions of Decision (160) of 1983.

Earlier this month, the commission had executed a judicial warrant against the general manager of Middle Euphrates Power Generation Company over allegations related to receiving bribes.
