Israeli police arrested a person carrying a knife who tried to approach the leader of the "Democrats" party, Yair Golan, in Tel Aviv.

The Israeli newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" reported that "an armed individual with a knife approached Golan, and security personnel subdued the suspect, who was then arrested by the police."

Golan said after the incident that "incitement and violence will not deter us, and this is a direct result of the poison machine run by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."

He added: "I call on everyone who cares about security and democracy to go out now and vote, so that we ensure the state returns to us."

This coincides with the Knesset elections that began today, Tuesday, in Israel, amid severe polarization among components of Israeli society, under repeated accusations from parties attempting to manipulate the voting results.

The Central Elections Committee in Israel stated that "contrary to circulating claims, there are no indications of systematic manipulation of votes by various parties."

It noted that any report of specific violations presented to the committee is dealt with immediately.
