The Israeli defense establishment has voiced serious concern over the harsh public statements made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz against Turkey and its president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, warning they could lead to an unnecessary escalation with Ankara, according to Israel's Channel 12.

These warnings come amid Tel Aviv’s monitoring of Turkey’s efforts to expand its influence within Syrian territory, and the Israeli military’s readiness for a potential confrontation or action against Turkey in the future.

Tensions had escalated following an attack targeting the Abu al-Duhur military airport in Idlib Governorate, which prompted the Israeli military to carry out the operation to prevent Turkish incursion, though the defense establishment preferred to keep it quiet to avoid direct confrontation.

Despite this, political rhetoric intensified; Defense Minister Israel Katz accused the Turkish president of leading his country into "dangerous adventures," mocking his speeches in parliament, while Netanyahu escalated his tone, calling Erdoğan a "tyrant" and accusing him of supporting Hamas and practicing oppression.

Military and security leadership fears these verbal attacks could undermine efforts to maintain field restraint and accelerate the pace of direct confrontation between the two sides in the Syrian arena.
