Jordan, Austria Sign Troop Deployment Agreement

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi confirmed during a joint press conference in Vienna with Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger that Jordan and Austria have signed an agreement permitting the presence of Austrian soldiers in Jordan. The arrangement is designed for defense-related programming, joint training, and expertise exchange, and explicitly excludes the establishment of Austrian military bases on Jordanian soil.

Historical ties and strategic partnership

Safadi emphasized that Jordanian-Austrian relations are longstanding, dating back more than 70 years. He described Austria as a “trusted partner and strong friend,” underscoring Amman’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across multiple domains.

Expanded cooperation agenda

Discussions between Safadi and Meinl-Reisinger covered broadening collaboration in tourism, economic and investment fields, defense, and security. Safadi noted that “important steps have been taken” in advancing these areas of mutual interest.

Austrian support for Jordan’s regional role

Safadi commended Austria’s support for Jordan, particularly its positions on regional peace and stability efforts. He also expressed appreciation for Austria’s humanitarian assistance—both in Gaza and in support of refugee populations.

Jordan’s stance on regional threats

Safadi stated that Jordan has been subjected to Iranian attacks. He condemned those attacks—not only against Jordan but also against other regional states—and reaffirmed Jordan’s continued backing of all diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution. “Diplomacy and dialogue are the effective means to resolve disputes and protect the region and the world from the catastrophic consequences of this war’s continuation,” he said.

Austrian recognition of Jordan’s regional contribution

In her remarks, Meinl-Reisinger characterized Jordan as a “trusted partner” and “pillar of stability” in the region. She praised Jordan’s engagement on Syria, Gaza, and Lebanon.
