Kenya’s Mount Kenya Power Struggle Intensifies Ahead of 2027 Elections

Kenya’s 2027 general elections are now entering a critical phase, as competition for control over Mount Kenya — the nation’s largest and most decisive electoral base — escalates. The outcome in this region is widely seen as pivotal in determining the identity of the next president.

Political realignment after Ruto’s deputy removal

The recent dismissal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has triggered a new political turning point. Gachagua is seeking to consolidate his influence within Kenya’s political landscape by championing the interests of Mount Kenya residents through his newly formed party, “Democracy for Citizens.” His stated aim is to position himself as an alternative to incumbent President William Ruto.

Opposition fragmentation and electoral volatility

The upcoming vote is unfolding against a backdrop of deep divisions within the opposition camp. These fractures have fueled speculation about Ruto’s prospects for securing a second presidential term — while also raising concerns that the electoral process could descend into violence amid ongoing disputes between opposition figures and state authorities.

Violence in recent by-elections raises alarm

Recent subnational by-elections witnessed widespread unrest, including strikes, fatalities, and deliberate arson attacks targeting schools across Kenya. These incidents have intensified fears that the 2027 general elections may spiral into chaos. According to the Electoral Vulnerability Index issued by the Kofi Annan Foundation, there is an 84% probability of violence occurring during the 2027 polls.

Analyst assessment of mounting polarization

Political analyst Mohamed Idris, who specializes in African affairs, stated: “Indeed, what occurred in the latest by-elections reveals the extent of political polarization in Kenya between President Ruto and his opponents. These actors may resort to force to resolve the struggle for power — making such concerns fully justified.”

In remarks to Iram News, Idris added: “Within the president’s camp, a significant electoral shock followed the defeat of Ruto’s candidate in the Ol Kalou constituency by-election — a loss suffered to a candidate from Gachagua’s party by a margin exceeding 80% of votes cast. This result serves as a genuine warning signal for Ruto’s campaign and could disrupt his electoral calculations.”

Idris also noted: “Conversely, a factor potentially advantageous to President Ruto is the threat issued by leaders from eastern Mount Kenya to secede from the traditional unified bloc — a development that could enable him to redraw the country’s political map.”

Opposition unity calls amid leadership uncertainty

Although the contours of the presidential race remain unclear, demands are growing for opposition forces to unify in order to unseat President Ruto.

African affairs analyst Mohamed Awal observed: “A profound and substantial division exists among opposition leadership over who should lead the challenge against President Ruto — a rift that significantly benefits him and strengthens his electoral chances.”

In a statement to Iram News, Awal explained: “Kenya’s opposition front faces a severe crisis and parallel internal conflicts over selecting a presidential candidate to contest Ruto. Loyalties are currently shifting between prominent figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiangi, while Gachagua has sent signals suggesting he may back Musyoka — following his earlier support for Gachagua during the deputy president’s removal.”

Awal concluded: “We are witnessing a fragmented and divided opposition landscape — a condition that could severely hinder its capacity to remove Ruto from office.”
