Libyan Military Intelligence Chief Killed in Benghazi Bomb Attack

Brigadier General Fawzi Al-Mansouri, head of the Libyan Military Intelligence Agency, was killed when an explosive device detonated beside his car in the Al-Hawari district of Benghazi, located in the country’s northeast.

Two security sources told Reuters that the chief of military intelligence for the Libyan National Army — operating under the eastern-based Libyan National Army command structure — died on Monday following the blast targeting his vehicle outside his residence in Al-Hawari.

The two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that Al-Mansouri was killed in the evening explosion. Neither identified the perpetrators nor provided further details about the explosive device.

According to preliminary information circulated by local media outlets and regional sources, the blast occurred shortly after Al-Mansouri left the Isha prayer and struck the vehicle he was riding in within the Sayyida Aisha neighborhood, resulting in his immediate death.

Appointment and Prior Command Role

Al-Mansouri had been appointed by Libyan National Army Commander Khalifa Haftar to lead the military intelligence apparatus under the Libyan General Command on 20 May 2024. Before that appointment, he served as commander of the Sebha Military Zone beginning 3 August 2021.

Official Condemnation and Response

Libyan official authorities issued a formal statement mourning Al-Mansouri, identifying him as director of the Military Intelligence Administration. The statement described the killing as “sinful and cowardly,” affirming that the blood of the nation’s citizens is inviolable and that terrorism will not prevail over the resolve of national institutions.

The eastern-based Libyan government released a separate statement expressing sincere condolences to the deceased’s family, his colleagues in the military institution, and the entire Libyan people. It directed all security agencies to act immediately to investigate the circumstances of the crime and to pursue those involved — including perpetrators, planners, and financiers — for prosecution.
