Maduro's Son Details Wife's Deteriorating Health in US Prison
Nicolas Maduro Guerra reports that his stepmother, Cilia Flores, suffers from severe heart and respiratory issues while detained in New York.

Nicolas Maduro Guerra stated that Cilia Flores is facing a critical cardiac condition during her incarceration. The former Venezuelan official will turn 70 years old on October 15. According to her son-in-law, the prison environment lacks the necessary conditions for her to fully recover from the medical procedures she requires.
Respiratory Distress and Prison Conditions
Flores is currently held with 40 other women, a population size described by Maduro Guerra as excessively large. He reported to AFP that a physical altercation between two inmates occurred recently. Security personnel intervened using pepper spray, which directly impacted Flores’s breathing. She suffers from asthma, making such exposure particularly dangerous.
The detainee began experiencing high blood pressure after January 3, the date of her arrest alongside Nicolas Maduro in Caracas. Prior to this event, she had not suffered from hypertension. Her legal team noted that before her detention, Flores was in good health and did not take medication for chronic diseases, except for a monthly injection.
Legal Requests for House Arrest
In September, Flores’s attorney formally requested her release from prison to be placed under house arrest. This petition aimed to facilitate proper medical treatment. The defense argues that current detention circumstances prevent access to adequate healthcare. They propose strict supervision measures if house arrest is granted within the United States.
These proposed conditions include armed surveillance around the clock and the use of an electronic ankle monitor. Additionally, the defense suggests confiscating her passport. However, the US prosecution has argued that the court should reject this request for modified custody arrangements.
Background on Detained Figures
Nicolas Maduro, aged 63, and Cilia Flores face charges related to drug trafficking into the United States. Both individuals deny these allegations. Maduro characterizes himself as a "prisoner of war." Flores, a lawyer by profession, previously served as President of the National Assembly from 2006 to 2011. She also held the position of Attorney General between 2012 and 2013.
Observers have assessed that Flores played a pivotal role within Venezuela’s governance structure. Maduro Guerra expressed hope for a positive development regarding her situation this week. The ongoing legal proceedings continue to address the balance between security concerns and humanitarian needs for the detained couple.
