Oil Before Nuclear: Vance Reorders Priorities in Iran War

US Vice President J.D. Vance said on Thursday that the main priority for the United States in the war against Iran is keeping oil and gasoline prices low for Americans, while preventing Tehran from possessing nuclear weapons ranks second.

These remarks contrast with statements by US President Donald Trump, who repeatedly emphasizes that the sole goal of entering the war is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, even if it requires short-term economic sacrifices from Americans.

Vance’s comments also underscore the fact that the conflict now centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz—the issue Iran has placed at the top of the negotiation agenda, according to AFP.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance said, "I know oil prices are low these days, even lower than the high levels seen in the early days of the conflict," adding, "That is the primary goal—keeping oil and gas prices affordable for Americans across our country."

He continued, "After that, it is clearly the second objective: ensuring Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon."

Vance was among the most skeptical members of the US administration about the effectiveness of military action against Iran in late February.

Yet his recent statements appear to confirm the more cautious approach favored by the current US president, which involves continuing strong economic pressure on Iran while maintaining military confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz.
