Photos: Wildfires in the United States Seen from Space

Russian cosmonaut Anna Kikina, aboard the International Space Station, said that smoke from some wildfires burning in the United States can be seen with the naked eye from space.

Kikina shared some photos she captured from the station of these fires, which are attached below, and added: "The most intense wildfires in the United States are concentrated in the states of Washington and Oregon. Some of these fires produce smoke plumes visible to the naked eye from space."

She added: "It's not always possible to photograph large fires on Earth from the space station due to the station's orbital path, our tasks onboard, or weather conditions. I also tried documenting wildfire situations in Europe. The footage shows the fire in Greece moving away from Athens and its intensity decreasing noticeably. I hope future monitoring of natural disasters will show no further fires like those observed today in the United Kingdom and Spain."

The United States has raised its highest alert level to combat wildfires, as nearly 90 fires are currently burning across different regions, with more than half concentrated in Washington and Oregon states in the northwestern part of the country.

Widespread fires in Spokane County, Washington, have prompted authorities to evacuate nearly 60,000 people following the destruction of hundreds of buildings, according to American media reports.
